My internal conflict with Before & After photos

I grew up in the heyday of the teen movie makeover. And there was almost nothing I loved more than a “glow-up” or seeing a transformation. Clueless, She’s All That, Pretty Woman, My Fair Lady and even Mrs Doubtfire. I couldn’t get enough of it. So I suppose it’s really no surprise that I ended up a Makeup Artist.

However, the older I get, the more I reject the idea that we need to become anything other than ourselves. So my take on makeup is giving yourself that little bit of extra polish, and using makeup to highlight your favorite parts of yourself so you can feel confident to let the world see the true YOU. Using makeup as a tool for self expression rather than to fit in.

I am launching a series of teen classes where we focus on just that. They will be small group sessions (or one-on-ones on request) where we will help young people 12-17 find their way along this journey while actively avoiding the pitfalls of this digital age of marketing makeup, skincare and various other ways of “fixing flaws”. While casually inflaming insecurites to the youth in their most vulnerable times.

Get in touch if you’re interested in setting up a teen makeup session at my studio in central Bath.

And for fun - here’s a few of my “Before & Afters” … and I can promise you - each one of these women knew just how beautiful I thought they were in their raw state.
